My linen Fumeterre skirt, a Deer and Doe pattern

.Fumeterre is a gorgeous long skirt pattern. Another pure gem that we owe to Deer and Doe, the indie pattern company so popular in France.

This is one I had put on my to-sew list for a while. I've always dreamt it with a white/cream linen, and was thrilled when I found this linen/cotton mix at Sewcialising, my new favourite fabric shop in York.

The pattern

Fumeterre is described as the ideal long skirt pattern. Designed to hug the hips and slightly flare up down the legs, it sculpts the silhouette in a very flattering way.

I've decided to sew the version A, with buttons down the front panel and belt hoops around the waist. The skirt is also available with a fly front zipper and patch pockets.

The slightly stretchy waist also makes this dress super comfortable throughout the day. in a nutshell, as the brand wrote on their instagram: ''The Fumeterre skirt is THE long skirt, fitting and flattering!''... and I tend to agree 100%!

The sewing process

This is a great pattern for all beginners, as the only tricky thing is its buttons and buttonholes on the front. But if you have a recent enough machine, it's likely it will automatically sew the buttonholes, dividing the trickiness by ten!

Its simplicity is also its biggest strength, as I personally think this skirt is so elegant because it's so 'plain'.

As you read above, I have chosen to sew this dress with linen, an easy enough fabric as it is not a slippery fabric at all. I didn't struggle with much with this skirt... But I did make a silly mistake though, when I sewed one of the front panel wrong side against right side... Silly indeed. I had used my overlocker, so of course had to unpick everything, which is always such a massive pain!

My own version of the Fumeterre skirt

I've worn, worn, and worn again this skirt all last Summer. It's really an ideal outfit, that I found so versatile. And I don't know if it's a very popular opinion, but I think it is a great piece of clothing when travelling!

First, because of its length, it makes it a very decent and comfortable outfit, wherever you are in the world. Sewn is an appropriate fabric, it will keep you cool thanks to its floating shape and buttons though.

And cherry on top... this skirt also turns into an amazing beach towel! I am only half-kidding writing this: Last summer, we went to beautiful Croatia, for a chilled vacation. It was really hot, so impromptu and spontaneous swims were numerous. It was so handy to just have to remove my skirt, go for a swim, and then lay on top of this big piece of fabric on the beach! So if you lack room in your suitcase, think about it before packing a beach towel!
